PostHeaderIcon Texting While Driving – Another Reason Cell Phones Should Not Be Used While Driving

Years ago when cell phones were first installed in vehicles, there were few things cooler than talking on the phone while cruising in your car.  Those who had phones in their cars were envied by those who couldn't afford it. It was a status symbol reserved for the elite. This luxury was beyond the reach of the average consumer because the equipment was expensive and the service providers really stuck it to you.

Now days, nearly everyone is carrying around a cell phone.  From young children to the children's great grandparents.  With the introduction of cheaper equipment and lower monthly bills, the gadgets have become available to virtually anyone who wants one.

It's no secret that countless car crashes have been caused by drivers who have been distracted while talking on their cellphones.  At the time this article was written, 21 states have laws either banning or restricting talking on a cell phone while driving.  Approximately 50 countries around the world have also banned or placed serious restrictions on gabbing while driving.  The current trend is for more and more jurristrictions to place bans on the dangerous behavior of driving while talking on the phone.

Technology is ever evolving and now their is an even greater danger on the road.  Drivers who are reading and sending text messages while they are behind the wheel!  Who would think that people could be so stupid?  It would seem that only a few of the "dumb" drivers are doing this but that's simply not the case.  Texting while driving is becoming a huge problem.

Studies suggest that as many as 20% of drivers are texting while in the drivers seat.  Those number rise significantly when looking at young adult drivers.  Estimates reveal that approximately 60% of drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 are involved in this dangerous behavior.  There's no way to know exactly how prevalent this problem is but one thing is for sure.  It's dangerous.  It's causing crashes.  It's causing injuries.  It's even causing deaths!

As of February, 2009 Alaska, California, Connecticut, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, Washington, and The District of Columbia have banned drivers from text-messaging while motoring.

Fines for violating these laws vary by location.  As of this year you'll get hit with a $101 dollar ticket if you're caught in Washington state.  Legislatures in Oregon are pushing for a $700 fine!

Regardless of how much green you may have to fork out, the reality is that you can be killed or kill someone else if you text while driving.  Do everyone a favor and put the phone away and concentrate on your driving.
